Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, the game for which this expansion is designed, is an incredibly complicated strategy title with an extremely steep learning curve that requires mastering a dictionary's worth of world-class techno-babble. As such, approaching the expansion, Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire, is enough to give one pause since quite naturally more of the same could logically be expected. Once you muster the courage to try it, though, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Given the disappointment that attended the expansion of another Sid Meier game, Civilization II, this is definitely a turn for the better.

Like most expansion packs, Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire shares the strengths and weaknesses of the game it extends and, in this case, this means a lot of complexity. However, the gameplay options in the expansion are different enough to renew interest in the game and keep it peaked for quite a while.

The most obvious improvement is the provision of seven new factions to play, including two offshoots of the ultra-powerful Progenitor alien race who are locked in an ideological blood feud. Playing the aliens can be fun, mainly for anti-social types. They can't ever settle their vendettas against each other and can't even talk to humans until they discover the Social Psych technological advance or a human faction learns about their own mentality in similar fashion. Gameplay mechanics for the aliens are also slightly different in that they have better control over research strategy, do not have to deal with commerce and have unique victory conditions.

Unfortunately, in order to keep the game balanced, the designers saddled them with some very awkward limitations. Even though the Progenitors are so advanced they actually 'built' Planet and their warring ships possess faster-than-light technology, the remnants that survive planet fall must rediscover every scientific advance as if Planet's atmosphere has mysteriously erased their brains and computer memory banks. The game's plot is also rather contrived. If the fate of Planet is so crucial to the ideological future of the Progenitors, why would they wait years for one of their factions to build a huge communication network before sending any other ships to check up on their progress?

While the presence of the Caretakers and Usurpers adds flavor to the game, the new human factions are actually the most interesting to play. The Pirates, for example, are the first-ever nation in any game of the Civilization family designed to live at sea, while handling the Free Drones represents a first-hand experiment in left-wing politics, the likes of which haven't been seen very often in computer strategy games.

With all the positive possibilities presented by the new factions, though, the game still suffers from an excess of dubious technical jargon. While the research tree in any science-fiction game is bound to contain words and expressions with meanings that are not immediately obvious, there is no excuse for names like Cloudbase Academy, Pulse Armor or Dissociative Wave. These types of terms make any evaluation of the relative values of units and improvements practically impossible until dozens of frustrating hours have been invested in playing the game.

Overall, the expansion is an interesting twist on the now classic Civilization II gameplay mechanics but with a daunting learning curve that requires a lot of patience.

Graphics: Representation of the units is often imprecise and color schemes are weird. Unlike StarCraft or Star Trek: The Next Generation -- Birth of the Federation, the game provides no unique user interfaces for the aliens, which detracts a little from the overall experience.

Sound: The ambient music is strange and quickly becomes annoying. Sound effects and voiceovers are average at best.

Enjoyment: The game contains nothing revolutionary to bring new fans to the genre but it has good value as a way to extend the original game.

Replay Value: The seven new factions insure a lot of depth in replay value.

I just downloaded and installed Yitsi's 3.5d, however ingame it still shows 3.5c. I downloaded again and installed a second time, deleting the terrainx.exe file then placing the new version in but still the same thing. Has anyone else noticed this or do you get 3.5d in ingame info.

I'm having the same problem. I installed 3.5d, but in-game it says 3.5c. Also, I'm not seeing any resolution options at all. Anyone with any info on this please?
EDIT: So, I found that putting 'DirectDraw=0' into the ini file, does change the resolution (to my desktop resolution I think) but the game crashes when I try to scroll the map...
EDIT 2: I tried installing PRACX.v1.07 too and the game still crashes when scrolling the map.
EDIT 3: Well, I ended installing the latest version of PRACX (v1.09). That version modifies the ini file for you to allow it to work. I then set the resolution to 1360x760 (for some reason it doesn't like 1366x768) and now everything runs fine.

Alpha Centauri Game Updates

From Australia
* Level 7 RESURRECTION *
caiman: For those of us knew to SMAC/X, could you advise which unofficial patches are pure bug-fix patches.
BlaneckW: Kyrub's patches don't add any features (besides bugfixes) to the game other than AI improvement. Yitzi has begun including bugfixes which I would consider to really be modifications but I don't personally consider the modification extensive at this point to be of worry for anyone who might not want modifications.
Scientt's patch is the only one that tried removing the unit limit, but you could probably install it if for some reason you don't want the AI improvements. Your game would only crash at 2000+ units on the map. Seeing as there were recently a lot of people using it, it's entirely possible you won't run into this.
I believe all of these patches are just EXE files. There aren't any installations. Download
If you want or don't mind AI improvements, and want bugfix SMAC, get Kyrubs patch.
If you do not wants AI improvements, Yitzi's SMAX patch is built on Kyrub's SMAX patch, which only has improvements to terraformer AI.
Scientt's foundational patch for SMAX, which all the others are built on, is outdated in bufixes and also has no AI improvements. Has the GOG vanilla version been updated since Kyrub's fix (to include bugfixes)?
Is it still necessary to apply unofficial patches (for bugfixes)? I know SMAC works (I have completed it), but I have yet to beat SMAX; I don't want to install SMAC-only updates that will clobber the sequel.

Just tried to install Yitzi's on the GOG Mac version, and Alien Crossfire now crashes immediately. Do not recommend!
Kryub's AI patch for SMAC (not X) does seem to work. It is just an exe replacement.
Neither patch is necessary to enjoy the game, IMO, but PRACX is actually really good on LCD monitors. Would be nice to get it going on the Mac version or in WINE.

I believe Scient's 2.0 patch is the latest and greatest, is that correct?
Also, do I need PRACX (graphics mod) with Scient's patch? It doesn't seem to be included.

I might be a little bit biased, but check out Thinker AI improvement patch for SMACX. It includes Scient's v2.0 patch in addition to the most extensive AI improvement this game has ever had. Thinker AIs regularly achieve economic output that is vastly higher than what the standard AIs usually manage. It's still under development, but most of the main features have already been implemented.
You can also use Pracx with it, but it is by no means required. Also playing the smac-in-smacx mod works with this patch.

Help! I've got some bug where suddenly and for no reason I can find. None of my bases will expand anymore. They stay at exactly their population with 'growth in 1 turn' forever. I've tried yitzi patch, and pracx patch, but can not find a solution to this. -Extra frustrating because I have normal gameplay, and then suddenly my game is ruined. I don't know when/how it occurs.

You need Industrial Automation and then build Hab Complex in your bases.

I downloaded Scient 2.0 from AlphaCentauri2.info and tried to run it on my Win7-32 but it says it's the wrong version of OS. Is it now for 64-bit only?
Will Thinker mod (that seems to include Scient fixes) run on Win7-32?

This game was made way before 64 bit processor era, so it will always run in 32 bit mode. You can still play it on 64 bit Windows because they include backwards compatibility. Thinker will always run with the game in 32 bit mode. If you're having some startup problems, I'd say reinstall the default GOG version and try from there. Normally there shouldn't be any problems, because this has been extensively tested to work with Windows 7.
