The LG G5 is a high end device which can easily perform almost any task, whether you want to use your phone at work or for playing the latest games from Google Play. Moreover, your device comes with built-in features through which you can perform different troubleshoot solutions, but overall you still can’t address complex issues. That’s why, I am here to assist you. So, in case you somehow manage to brick your LG G5, don’t hesitate and read all the lines from below – there you can learn different dedicated troubleshoot solutions that can address even the most complex issues.
The Android Oreo update has been rolling out for the LG G5 for some time now. If you haven’t received the OTA update yet, you can download and install the Android 8.0 Oreo firmware on LG G5 (H830, H850) manually using LG Flash Tool. The LG G5 is perhaps one product the Korean company would.
The Android system is an open source platform, so, even though you have one of the best devices out there, you can still end up in bricking its Android OS. So, we are talking about software related problems, which can be fixed if you choose to resume the following guidelines. On the other hand, if you manage to hard brick your LG G5, then I am afraid I can’t really help you anymore. In that situation you will have to take your phone back to service and ask for an official technical assistance – you will have to pay for these services if you can’t reclaim the warranty of your smartphone.
But, how can you end up in soft bricking your LG G5 and what type of problems can be identified on a bricked device? These two questions will be detailed during the following lines so before checking the actual troubleshoot methods, I will tell you a few words on these two particular topics – hopefully, you can use this info in order to avoid future problems.
First of all, you must know that you don’t have to do something in particular in order to experience software related issues. During time, you can just notice that your LG G5 is no longer running as fast as it used to. Or after installing a new app from Google Play you notice that you get several screen freeze issues or other similar alerts. Moreover, you can even end up in experiencing bugs and lags after flashing a new official Android update. Thus, as a first conclusion, the most common problems are caused by regular tasks, so in this situation you must apply a few restoration procedures which can easily troubleshoot all your problems.
The severe problems, such as battery drain, heating issues, boot loops or total blackouts are usually the result of a custom operation. Yes, that’s right: if you are an advanced user and if you like to tweak your LG G5, chances are you will eventually brick your Android powered smartphone. I am talking about dedicated and usually unofficial procedures like: gaining root access, flashing a custom recovery image (like CWM or TWRP recovery), removing bloatware, installing a custom kernel, updating with custom ROMs (such as CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android and so on), or overclocking / undervolting the CPU frequencies.
Such operations can’t be related with your OEM or with Google. Moreover, in most situations for completing one of the up-mentioned tasks you need to use a third party app or process. Well, if this app isn’t stable enough, you can end up in bricking your LG G5. As a conclusion, you should always use only tested and trustful apps – you can also ask for other opinions before deciding to download and use a certain tool or program.
As already mentioned during the lines from below, the most common software related issues that can be caused on the LG G5 are referring to bugs, lags, force close, alerts, errors, screen freeze, battery drain, heating situations, boot loops, total blackouts and so on. What’s great is that you can easily manually address all these issues, through one of the methods from down below. Do note that all the troubleshoot solutions from this tutorial are official operations – you won’t lose your phone’s warranty if you choose to follow this step by step guide.
Moreover, you can unbrick the LG G5 whether your phone is currently rooted, locked, installed with a custom ROM or with the stock Android OS, running on a locked or unlocked bootloader, flashed with a custom or with the stock recovery image and so on.
What you need to do before trying to unbrick your LG G5 is to backup your data – if that’s still possible. You see, some of the methods from down below will restore your phone back to its initial state which means you will lose all the third party apps and data such as images, videos, audio files, market apps, internet settings, EFS folder, IMEI / NVRAM data, calendar info, saved passwords, personal files, contacts, call logs, text messages and so on. Thus, use a cloud storage platform, sync your data with your account or use any other backup and restore tool and save everything you might need afterwards.
Moreover, charge your LG G5 before trying out any of the procedures from this tutorial. Even if your device can’t be turned on no more, just plug in the charger and wait an hour or two. Do that as if your device will get turned off while you try to complete a certain troubleshoot solution, you will manage only to mess things up even worst.
How to Unbrick the LG G5
Enter Android Safe Mode
The best way in which you can diagnostic a certain problem is by rebooting your LG G5 into Android Sade Mode. Through this dedicated environment you can see what’s wrong, you can fix the problem and restore your phone back on track. Usually, through the Android Safe Mode you can stop an irresponsive program, you can close an app, uninstall a process or a tool or erase a malware. So, by using this method you can fix screen freeze, or you can address the problems that are freezing the display. Thus, don’t hesitate and learn how to enter and use Android Safe Mode on the LG G5.
Make a hard reset
If you can’t fix your problems through the Android Safe Mode, then you must try the hard reset solution. This is a dedicated operation that will erase everything from your LG G5. And I really mean everything: finally your phone will be restored back to its initial state, so during the wiping process you can also get rid of malicious apps, unresponsive features, bugs, third party tools, malware and so on. Through this operation you can also speed up your LG G5 and clear some space when that’s required. Thus, do learn how to hard reset the LG G5 and try to unbrick your phone right away.
Clear app data cache
In addition to the hard reset operation you can also clear app data cache. This is a great solution, especially when you are dealing with boot loops (your LG G5 gets stuck in fastboot mode, in the recovery environment or your phone can’t get pass the LG logo). Here is how you can complete this process:
- First of all, power off your device.
- Wait while the shut down process is completed.
- Now, enter recovery mode on your LG G5.
- From recovery select “wipe data factory reset” (choose this only if you want to make a hard reset).
- Then select “wipe cache partition”.
- Afterwards, pick “advance” and choose “wipe dalvik cache”.
- When done, go back to main menu of recovery and select “reboot system now”.
Reinstall the stock Android OS
If any of the troubleshoot solutions from above aren’t working for you and for your LG G5, then what’s left is to downgrade your phone back to stock. This operation implies in reinstalling the Android OS on your device. Through this process you can get rid of all the software related issues.
But, for being able to do so, you must download the full Android firmware that’s compatible with the LG G5 – you can get the update file from LG’s official web site, from xda-developers.com or from any other source you prefer.
If you apply this process then you will restore your device back to stock. Therefore, root access will be revoked, the bootloader relocked and all the factory and default restrictions reinstalled. You will also replace the current Android OS with the official Android system.
A computer will be required on this method as several files must be downloaded on the same device – if you have problems while trying to download the files, temporarily turn off the security protection from your computer. On your smartphone you will have to become a developer by going through “menu – settings – about phone” from where to tap several times on Built Number. Finally, you have to enable the USB Debugging feature, which can be found under “menu – settings – developer options”.
Now, all you have to do is to download the LG Flash Tool from here and the official Android firmware file for your LG G5. Install the flashing tool on your computer along with the LG G5 USB drivers. Next, reboot your phone into fastboot mode and connect it with your computer with the help of the USB cord. After doing so, run the LG Flash Tool and follow on screen prompts in order to resume the installation process – further details can be accessed here.
Conclusions
These are the easiest ways in which you can manually unbrick the LG G5. Of course, there are other, more complex, troubleshoot solutions to apply, but this tutorial should be what you need.
