Secrets of Grindea: A Brief Overview for Beginners
Finally! It's Finally Done! Whoo hoo! Yeah! It's Done!
Ahem. Excuse me. So I designed this guide after watching your recent videos and vlogs of the game, and it does seem like you guys are making progress.
Still, you look like you could use some help.
I’ve previously made such a guide and already posted it onto your subreddit. Since then I’ve wanted to make a more complete version. However, as you guys had previously appeared to have stopped playing, I had neglected to complete this with any haste.
That all changed however with the newest 0.650 patch. A new area has just been added, and with it the chance that you guys will start playing the game again. Thus, I have found the motivation to finish this little tutorial guide in the hopes that it will help guide you along your adventures.
So please share this with everyone else Kim.
This guide will not only cater to the Yogscast. Anyone new to the game can read this guide and learn from it. Bear in mind that it isn’t a guide on how to solve puzzles or tactics on how to fight bosses, but a guide on the mechanics of the game.
Before we begin, a disclaimer: I am by no means the greatest Grindea player. Nor am I the most skilled – far from it, actually. It is also certain that I am not the most knowledgeable. With that being said, I have been a long time player of the game – since before the season’s dungeon, and certainly before Talents were a thing. Heck, in my time, we had no Silver/Gold Crystal nonsense! Thus, I have quite a bit of experience, though again I’m nowhere near the longest playing player – just a relatively well-informed one.
That said, as I am only human, this guide may potentially contain misinformation or bias views. If there are any more experienced players out there reading this, please inform me of any such problems and I will rectify them as soon as I can.
Also, this guide will only cover the Stable releases. As for the unstable Frontier versions, as they are still being play-tested, and they do not impact the play-style of the game, they are not important for this discussion as of this moment.
Finally, I won’t be including optimum builds, tips on how to defeat bosses, detailed descriptions of skills and talents, and such to a great degree – if any at all. I find that part of the fun of playing this game is figuring out this kind of stuff on your own.
So, with that out of the way, let us get started.
First off, let us cover the most important thing you will be doing for nearly the entire game: combat. Or more accurately, the basic mechanics of combat. And where better to start then with the most obvious of choices – weapons.
Combat – Weapons: A Difference of Play-styles
Combat is a straightforward affair. You hit things with your weapon and prevent things from hitting you by either blocking or avoiding them. There are a number of features that help to facilitate this. We will begin with the most obvious: your weapon.
Weapons are split into 2 categories: Melee and Ranged. Melee combat is further split into one-handed and two-handed weapons, while ranged is currently – and for the foreseeable future – limited to the bow.
One-handed weapons have the benefit of being fast. They are the most reliable form of DPS in the game. In other words, they deal the most damage in a given amount of time reliably. This is important, as although the bow deals damage faster and from a safer position, one-handed weapons require no ammunition.
They are incredibly powerful against single opponents, as they allow for the targeting and pouring of all their damage into a single target. This makes them very useful against bosses. Unfortunately, they don’t work as well against mobs. When swarmed, a one-handed player has to sacrifice hit-rate in favour of running and blocking, as they can only focus on a few targets at a time.
This is the exact opposite for two-handed weapons. Their fighting style makes use of the fact that there is a pseudo-stun mechanic in place. Whenever a hostile is hit, they flinch. This locks them and prevents them from doing anything else, simultaneously protecting the player and allowing the dealing of more damage.
This mechanic can be exploited by both types of melee weapons, and indeed against a single opponent, the one-handed weapons excels due to this. But against a group of hostiles, the two-handed weapons have no equal. They have a long reach, a wide coverage, and high damage per hit. This allows them to hit multiple targets in a single swing, stun-locking them and allowing more attacks to be done. Of course, this is a bad match-up against bosses, as there is (usually) only one target to hit, and no stun mechanic in play.
Effectively the two main styles are guerrilla hit & run tactics, and the basic tank stand-your-ground technique.
Compared to them, the bow is a unique play style that is more of a supportive one to the two main weapon types than anything else. It can’t be upgraded, has no related Skills or Talents, and only one supportive improvement to it – a quiver that increases the amount of arrows you can carry by 5.
That being said, the bow is by far the most powerful weapon in the game. It has the longest range – the entire screen – and the highest DPS output. It fires as fast as you can spam it, and only requires minimal effort to aim. The only limiting factor is the arrow count. A standard quiver only carries 20 arrows, which you will run out of fairly quickly. The two ways of recovering arrows is by killing mobs (which will often drop them as loot), or going back to town, which fully replenishes them.
From this, you should understand that the bow is a supportive weapon, and despite its incredible capabilities, should not be the main fighting style. Well, it might work if you are playing in multiplayer as a support, but it’s safer to have a melee style as a back-up for bosses, as they don’t drop arrows.
However, Grindea isn’t such a simple, straightforward game. There are further intricacies to combat that change the way weapons are used. I speak of course of every RPG staple: skills.
Combat – Skills: Crystals & Charges
Skills are options that grant you certain benefits that change the way you handle combat. There are 3 schools of skills – Melee, Magic, and Support – all of which have several sub-categories.
It is important to note that some skills – the Melee skills, to be exact – have requirements to using them, like the Piercing Dash requiring the using of a one-handed weapon.
Before we venture any deeper, let us talk about how you obtain skills. Whenever your character levels up, you will obtain a Skill Crystal. Allocating this to a skill allows you to gain access to and improves that skill. That being said, there are no ranks to a skill. Instead, skills are graded based on how powerful a Charge they can hold.
To charge a skill, you have to hold down the button that activates it. Holding it instead of instantly casting it causes your character to go into a holding position. You will see a flash animation appear and a sound whenever a skill’s Charge reaches another level. Charging a skill increases its potency, but also increases it’s casting cost and can be time consuming, thus it requires a lot of skill (get it?) to master Charging. But is can be extremely useful.
There are currently 4 ranks: None, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. The longer you charge, the higher the ranking of the skill unleashed. However, you don’t get the ranks just by having a skill. Here’s how to unlock each rank:
• None: Have at least 1 Silver Crystal in a skill
• Bronze: Have at least 1 Silver Crystal in a skill
• Silver: Have at least 5 Silver Crystals in a skill
• Gold: Have 5 Silver Crystals and 5 Gold Crystals in a skill
Notice that the Crystals in a skill differ in colour: Silver and Gold. The difference between them is simple. First off, you get Silver Crystals at every level. Gold Crystals you get only every 2 levels. Secondly, the first 5 skill points you can allocate to a skill have to be Silver, whereas the last 5 skill points have to be Gold.
A few things to note about skills and charging:
• Using a skill after performing a Perfect Guard with a shield causes the skill to automatically be Charged up to the highest possible level.
• Instead of just increasing the potency, some skills – like Summon Plant – have drastically different effects based on their Charge. Read the description to see what each skill does.
• There is a helpful tab on the bottom left side of the skills menu that indicates things like a skill’s ease of use, style of play, and other such quirks. They can be very useful information to have before deciding on a skill to unlock.
Now that we’ve talked about skills, it’s time to enter the subject concerning those things at the bottom of them in the menu. Say hello to the newest addition to combat in Grindea: Talents.
Secrets Of Grindea Cheats
Combat – Talents: Small But Noticeable
Talents are a relatively new addition to the game, and are the exact opposite of skills – whereas skills are active and require constant activation from the player, talents are passive boosts that increase a player’s abilities.
Games Like Secrets Of Grindea
Talents are split into three sections: General, Melee, and Magic. As the names suggest, they each govern different aspects of a character. You gain and rank-up a Talent by spending Talent Orbs, which you get once every time you level up.
And… that’s it really. There aren’t a lot of things you can say about talents. They provide a small but noticeable bonus to your character, and is quite a nice addition to the game, in my own opinion.
But all these attacks and bonuses won’t do you any good if you keep dying, and as Kim discovered, your Defence stat isn’t all that good at absorbing damages. That’s where the all-mighty shield comes in.
Combat – Shields: Safety First
The shield is just that: a piece of metal or wood or whatever that is big enough for you to use to block enemy attacks. It is a straightforward affair, really.
Blocking an attack with the shield prevents damage done. This is useful for regular mobs. The attacks from bosses can be blocked as well, but they usually have a form of Shield Breaking, so blocking them isn’t recommended.
All shields have a durability: an amount of damage they can suppress before breaking. When a shield blocks an attack, the durability goes down. If it isn’t in use, the durability regenerates and goes up.
If a shield is pushed too far, it breaks. This is a problem because you are now completely defenceless, and a broken shield takes slightly longer to regenerate, leaving you wide open! So knowing when to block and when to run is very important.
Quick tip: Break barrels. Lots of them. There is a small chance that a Barrel Shield will drop. For a shield that is relatively easy to obtain early on, it is surprisingly sturdy, sporting a hefty 275 durability – just 100 shy of the strongest shield currently in the game.
See, straightforward isn’t it. Well hold up. Like all things in Grindea, this isn’t the end. This is important, so listen up poozers! Time for the next part of blocking: performing a Perfect Guard.
Combat – Perfect Guard: Game Changing
Perfect Guard is a mechanic central to the blocking system, and is of HUGE importance. No, seriously, it is VERY important. Note the capital letters used. In fact, if Grindea wasn’t so grind heavy, it would be named Perfect Guardia instead… Well, maybe not, but still. It’s important.
A Perfect Guard is performed when you block an attack – be it melee or ranged – at the right moment, just before the attack connects and completes. Doing this prompts an animation of a shield-shaped force field to appear around your shield and a sound effect to play.
Knowing how to perform a Perfect Guard is incredibly handy. The durability of a shield decreases less if an attack is Perfectly Guarded against, allowing for more attacks to be blocked before the shield breaks. Also, if a Perfect Guard is performed against a melee attack, the attacker is stunned for a few moments – the most noticeable example of this is the bees that fall onto the ground in the Pillar Mountains. Ranged attacks will be bounced back as well, though where the attack flies off to depends on your aim.
However, the Perfect Guard’s usefulness does not end there. Immediately after a Perfect Guard is performed, the next weapon attack done by the player will always be a guaranteed Critical Hit. Yup, you read that right. No questions asked. Facing an overly powerful mob? Stun them with a Perfect Guard and pour on the damage!
Another important thing about Perfect Guards that I’m mentioned previously concerns skills. When a skill is charged (Note charged, not used) immediately after performing a Guard that skill is immediately charged up to its maximum possible Charge. Very handy.
Okay, okay. Hold up. I know this is exciting stuff, but before you go on and start Perfect Guarding everything, there are a few things you need to know. One thing really: When to run away. Not everything can be Perfectly Guarded against. A continues attack like the Yeti’s frost breath can’t be Guarded against, and bosses can still break shields, so be careful. Sometimes avoiding an attack is better than standing there and taking it.
Be that as it may, Perfect Guards are still an important aspect of the game. So use those shields people! I’m looking at you Yogscast. Shields up! I SAID SHIELDS UP!!!
Ahem… And that’s it really. Everything a beginner needs to know about combat in Grindea.
It’s not over just yet, however, as there are a couple of small things left to cover. Namely pets & cards.
Combat –Pets: You Are What They Eat
A pet is a mob that you have tamed using special food items. After presenting said item, a small parody mini-game of Dance Dance Revolution will start. Complete this and you will get yourself a pet.
A pet’s stats, appearance, and name can all be accessed in the Pet’s tab of the menu. A pet doesn’t help you directly in combat, but by feeding it different foods, it can give you a passive bonus to health, attack damage, and so on. This is a good way to spend a lot of the edible stuff you find during your adventures.
A very important thing to note about this passive bonus is the way the level up. By feeding a pet a certain amount of items like apples, potions, or fish, you will cause a progress bar corresponding one of the five attribute – Health, Mana, Damage, Crit, & Speed – to increase. When a progress bar has been completely filled, your pet will level up, and from then on give you a slight bonus in the chosen attribute.
Be warned however that every level gained increases the require amount to level up to increase for all progress bars, not just the one that levelled up. This makes it harder to generalise your pets. Instead, it is advised to specialise your pets. Have one that increases damage while another that increases health and so on. Like players however, there is no level limit to this, so don’t worry too much about it.
Combat – Cards: More Reasons To Grind
Cards are very rare items found as loot dropped from mobs. Cards provide a slight permanent bonus to your character. A Journal in the menu can be accessed to check-up on your card collecting progress.
A quick tip on farming cards: Elite enemies have a 10x drop rate for cards.
A very useful card to have is the Present card (The Green Box Monster that spawns bombs). After attaining the card, all enemies now have a chance of dropping an orange gift box. Opening it will give you a random drop loot, granting you a higher chance of getting that rare drop you needed to craft your Laser Sword!
Tutorial Done
And that’s it. For real this time. There are still lots more we can cover, but I believe that these basics are all anyone needs to get started. Let me know if you find any misleading information within the contents of this post, and thank you for reading.
Happy Grinding!
